Not all breakup statements are created equally, but the Bachelor Nation splits are adding up in 2022. Bachelor in Paradise season 7 pair Maurissa Gunn and Riley Christian were the first couple to call it quits this year.
“We have decided to go our separate ways. Never did we imagine this, but we’ve come to a point where we both need to work on ourselves,” their joint statement, released in January, read. “We’ve appreciated everyone’s love and support so far throughout our journey and we just ask that you please respect our privacy as we navigate through this.”
Gunn, who moved to New York City for her romance with Christian, has since implied that their split wasn’t as amicable as it seemed.
“Make sure you’re compatible with how you want to raise kids, how you want to have family, things like that, where you want to live. I made the mistake by trying to sacrifice everything going into it for love,” she said on the “Almost Famous” podcast in April. “But I mean, I don’t think it was really a sacrifice — when you’re in love, that’s what you do. … I’m still questioning it myself.”
In June, two Bachelorettes went through breakups. Michelle Young and Nayte Olukoya announced on June 17 that they called off their engagement.
“I’m struggling to say that Nayte and I will be going out separate ways but I stand with him in knowing the heaviness that is present in both our hearts as this relationship has been very real for us,” the teacher wrote via Instagram Stories. “To you, Nayte, you quickly became my best friend and the love I have for you is incredibly strong. I will never stop wanting to see you succeed.”
Olukoya added at the time, “Michelle and I are going to move forward separately. Hearts are heavy, emotions are high and we are dealing with this the best way we can.”
The twosome’s proposal aired on the season 18 finale of The Bachelorette in December 2021. The previous lead, Katie Thurston, went through a split of her own the same month as Young — but declined to offer much information about ending her relationship with John Hersey at the time.
“Statement: No, we aren’t together,” Thurston wrote via Instagram Stories on June 20.
Thurston and Hersey started seeing each other in November 2021, one month after the season 17 star ended her engagement to winner Blake Moynes.

One week after going public with their rekindled romance when the BiP season 8 reunion aired on November 22, they called it quits.
“I had no other I had no other choice. I literally had no other choice. I had to do what was best for myself. And there’s just a line and, like, standards that you have for yourself that you just can’t allow people to cross,” Chin said on the “Click Bait” podcast. “The trust had been broken. And that in a long-distance relationship, you need communication and trust, and we had neither of those things.”
The twosome called it quits six months after the finale aired.
“With incredibly heavy hearts, we wanted to share that we have decided to go our separate ways,” they captioned a joint Instagram post on September 23. “For anyone who has ever loved, knows this was a painful decision to make and not one taken lightly. … This is not an easy time for either of us but we stand in support of each other and hope to see the other go on to find happiness and healing. Although Claysie is no more, we hope that our communities can support us individually as we move forward with love and respect for each other.”
The Bachelor season 22 alum called off her July nuptials to Seli nearly two weeks before they were scheduled to walk down the aisle.
“I realized we had irresolvable incompatibilities. I love him and want him to find happiness with someone who is more right for him,” Trumbull exclusively told Us on August 4. “Much of our relationship was wonderful and I will always be rooting for him on the sidelines.”
“As Katie stated earlier, we are no longer dating,” Hersey wrote on June 21 via Instagram. “This decision was not made lightly, and it was obviously not an easy one to make.”
“I will always acknowledge and appreciate the adventures, support and growth both Nayte and this experience have brought me. At the same time, I’m deeply hurting and will need time and space to work through this heartbreak,” Young wrote via Instagram Stories.
Olukoya, for his part, explained: “When we both started this journey, we were looking for our soulmates. Our forever. Our best friends. However, as we grow and learn, we also really that sometimes somebody that you hold dear to your heart isn’t somebody you’re meant to spend the rest of your life with.”
The pair’s split turned messy after their initial statement when Gunn “liked” a series of tweets from alums about the pair.
“Yall got the Maurissa and Riley break up SO WRONG,” Demi Burnett wrote in February. “I’m mad at the BS being portrayed! I don’t want to talk about it bc it’s stressful and not my business to tell! BUT LOOK DEEPER LISTEN TO UR INTUITION.”
A post by Deandra Kanu read — “It’s not okay by any means to be the catalyst of your own demise and then go onto socials and ask for the publics sympathy. There are always two sides to a story” — and it also got cosigned by Gunn with a “like.”
