We’re not sure what’s in the air lately, but plenty of celebrities are feeling scissor happy. Some are opting for chin-grazing bobs like Cara Delvigne‘s, while others, namely Lupita Nyong’o, are choosing short pixies.
Nyong’o debuted her new TWA (teeny weeny Afro) to TikTok fans on April 16. In the video, Nyong’o held scissors to her hair while her hairstylist Vernon François watched in the background. The duo lip-synced a TikTok sound before the video transitioned to show Nyong’o sticking her head out of a car window and smiling with her close-cropped hair. She kept the TikTok caption short, simply stating, “I cut my hair!”
The Black Panther actor did tease the haircut on April 13 with a selfie on Instagram, but it wasn’t until the 16th that she dedicated an Instagram post to it. In her Instagram video, she caressed her sisterlocks as she said her goodbyes. “It’s time to let you go. It’s sad. It’s oh so sad,” she said as she ran her finger through her locs. “You’ve been so good to me. You’ve been so thick for the first time in my life. I’m going to miss you.”
Before the video transitions to her TikTok video, she bid her final farewell to her sisterlocks with several kisses. To complete the emotional moment, Nyong’o had Boyz II Men’s “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” playing in the background.

Nyong’o is no stranger to short cuts, as the TWA was her signature look for several years. We’re not sure what inspired her to return to her pixie, but she definitely had it planned for 2023. At the beginning of the year, Nyong’o and François filmed a TikTok in which they lip synced a scene from the film Waiting to Exhale that ended in both Nyong’o and François haphazardly hacking at her hair. At the time, it simply seemed like a joke between the two, but now looking back, we notice that she wore the same leopard print sweater she had in the Instagram video where she bid her locs adieu.
Perhaps Nyong’o’s hair has been short this entire time and she was simply waiting for the perfect moment to reveal it. Regardless if the cut happened in January or a few short days ago, she looks marvelous with her TWA.
