Officially, Kourtney Kardashian‘s birthday was on April 18, but from the looks of her Instagram, it was also on April 19, 20, and 21. She’s been posting pictures of the celebration for several days — especially the family-and-friends bowling party. And although we got to see her birthday outfit in an Instagram carousel yesterday, it wasn’t until today that I realized what a throwback her hairstyle was.
Virtually everything about Kardashian’s look screamed 1990s: the Mongolian-style collar on a tie-front animal-print top with matching long skirt? True ’90s glam — and unlike the Gen Z’ers bringing back the trends of that time based on old photos, Kardashian (and myself, a person six days older than she is) lived through them the first time and can be trusted to replicate them with the utmost accuracy.
But the most ‘90s thing about Kardashian’s birthday look was her hair. Sure, there were instantly recognizable retro tendrils, but it wasn’t totally apparent with the first round of photos. However, when the second carousel went up on Friday, I stopped in my swiping tracks on slide nine.
There, in all its glory, was the undeniable favorite hair accessory of the late-1990s: a cluster of snap clips. They had the honor of securing Kardashian’s short ponytail in an upright position, creating a spiky, fanned-out look (oh, the nostalgia!) that peeks out from behind her “birthday girl” tiara.
