A red lip is always a classic choice, but not all matte liquid lipsticks wear as well as this Best of Beauty-winning favorite does. Pound Cake Red Velvet Cake Batter has a suede-textured formula with just the right amount of pigment for a gorgeous, long-lasting payoff — without being overly fiddly to apply.

The flexible, doe-foot applicator applies a sharp finish. It’s so opaque, one swipe will do the trick, making it my go-to for hours-long events where I know there won’t be many touch-up opportunities. It plays well with lip liner, blending seamlessly into other formulas regardless of brand. For a more subtle look, I’ll add a dot of the pigment to the center of my lips and blend it out with my fingers to create a soft, blurred finish.
